An outdoor compressor connected to one or more indoor wall units by a small refrigerant line, with no ductwork. It is the usual answer for a room the ducted system never reaches: additions, converted garages, finished basements, attics and sunrooms.
Yes. A multi-zone system runs several indoor heads off one outdoor unit, and each head is controlled separately, so you are not heating or cooling rooms nobody is in.
Most do. They are heat pumps, so they run in reverse in winter. In an Ontario winter a mini split is usually best treated as supplementary heat for the space it serves rather than a whole-home replacement.
Far less than adding ductwork. It needs a small penetration through the exterior wall for the line set, a mount for the indoor head and a pad or bracket outside. Most single-zone installations are done in a day.
The indoor head is generally quieter than a forced-air register, because the compressor is outside. Placement still matters, and where the head goes is worth thinking about before it is mounted rather than after.
Regular filter cleaning, which is a homeowner job, plus a periodic professional clean of the indoor coil and blower wheel. Skipping the coil clean is the usual cause of the musty smell people complain about.
Before you replace equipment, check what it qualifies for. Between the federal and Enbridge programs, a qualifying upgrade can come back to you in rebates — we will tell you which of these apply to your job.
