Is It an Emergency?

What counts as a furnace emergency.

Call any hour if your furnace is doing any of these.

  • No heat, and the house is getting colder
  • Cold air from the vents while the furnace runs
  • Loud banging or screeching from the furnace
  • A strong burning or electrical smell. Switch the furnace off and call
  • Water pooling around a high-efficiency furnace
  • The furnace keeps shutting itself off

A faint dusty smell the first time the heat comes on each fall is normal. It should fade soon.

Can it wait? If the house is warm and the furnace is just noisy, book a regular furnace repair instead.

Safety First

Gas smell or CO alarm? Get out first.

A gas smell or a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm is not a repair call yet. If you smell gas:

  • Get everyone out of the house now
  • Do not use light switches, phones, lighters or anything that could make a spark
  • From outside, call Enbridge Gas on 1-866-763-5427 or call 911
CO alarm going off? Get everyone out, pets too, and call 911 from outside. Carbon monoxide has no smell, so never ignore the alarm.
Once it is safe, call us. Our licensed gas fitter does the gas work in house, so one company finds and fixes the problem.

Before You Call

Six quick checks before you call.

Fall is when most furnaces get switched on again. The cause of no heat is often simple, so try these first.

  • Thermostat set to Heat, and a few degrees above room temperature
  • Fresh thermostat batteries. A blank screen usually means dead ones
  • Furnace power switch on. It looks like a light switch, on or near the furnace
  • Furnace breaker not tripped. Reset it once only
  • Filter not badly clogged. If it is grey and caked, change it
  • Furnace door pushed fully closed. A safety switch keeps the furnace off if it is loose

Give it a few minutes after each check. More help is in our guide to a furnace not turning on.

None of these fixed it? Call us. Do not take panels off or keep resetting the furnace.
What Happens Next

What happens when you call.

The same steps on every emergency furnace call in Mississauga, day or night.

While You Wait

Keep the house safe while you wait.

A few simple steps keep everyone safe and protect your pipes.

  • Keep space heaters at least 1 metre from curtains, bedding and furniture. Plug them straight into the wall
  • Open the cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls, so warm air reaches the pipes
  • If the pipes might freeze, let a cold tap drip slowly
  • Never heat the house with the oven, the stove top, a barbecue or a camping heater. They can start a fire or fill the house with carbon monoxide

FAQ

Emergency furnace repair FAQs.

Will you answer if my furnace quits in the middle of the night?

Yes. Our phone is answered 24/7, nights and weekends included. We ask what the furnace is doing and give you any safety steps. We will not promise an exact arrival time, but we will be honest about when to expect us.

How much does emergency furnace repair cost?

It depends on what has failed. A part that needs cleaning is a much smaller job than a new circuit board. The technician finds the fault, then gives you the price, and nothing is fixed until you agree. Our published prices are on the pricing list.

Is a furnace with no heat really an emergency?

It can be. From fall to spring, Mississauga nights can drop below freezing. Call right away if someone at home is elderly, a baby or unwell. If the house is still warm, try the quick checks on this page first, then call if they do not help.

My furnace is blowing cold air. Do I need an emergency call?

Check the thermostat fan setting first. If it says On, set it to Auto. If the air is still cold, the burners are not lighting or a safety switch has shut them off. That needs a technician, so call us.

Why does my furnace keep shutting off on its own?

Usually it is protecting itself. A clogged filter can make it overheat, and a blocked drain can stop a high-efficiency furnace. Change the filter if it is dirty and turn the furnace switch off and on once. If it shuts off again, call us.

I smell gas near my furnace. Who do I call first?

Not us. Get everyone out first, and do not touch switches or use a phone inside. From outside, call Enbridge Gas on 1-866-763-5427 or 911. Once they say it is safe, call us and our licensed gas fitter will fix the problem.

My carbon monoxide alarm went off while the furnace was running. What now?

Get everyone out, pets too, and call 911 from outside. Do not stay in to look for the cause. Once emergency services say the house is safe, call us to check the furnace and its venting.

My old furnace broke down. Should I pay for an emergency repair or replace it?

It depends on its age, the size of the repair and how often it has failed before. We give you both options and honest advice, and you decide. Replacement prices are on our pricing list, with 0% financing from $42 a month on qualifying installs.
