Does a heat pump actually work in an Ontario winter?

Modern cold-climate heat pumps keep producing heat well below freezing, which is a genuine change from the units people remember from twenty years ago. Most Ontario installations are set up as a hybrid: the heat pump carries the milder part of the season and a gas furnace takes over in deep cold.

Is a heat pump cheaper to run than my furnace?

It depends on the spread between electricity and gas prices and on how cold it gets. A hybrid system is designed to switch to whichever is cheaper at a given outdoor temperature. We will be straight with you about where the crossover falls rather than promising savings we cannot stand behind.

Can one heat pump handle both heating and cooling?

Yes. A heat pump is an air conditioner that can run in reverse, so it replaces the cooling side of your system as well as taking on part of the heating.

Are there rebates for heat pumps?

There are federal and Enbridge Gas programs for qualifying home energy upgrades, and heat pumps are typically among the eligible measures. Eligibility depends on the equipment, the home and the program's current rules, so check the programs linked on this page before you commit and we will tell you what your job qualifies for.

Do I need to replace my ductwork for a heat pump?

Not usually, but the ducts have to be able to carry the airflow. Undersized or leaky returns limit what any system can deliver, and that gets assessed before the equipment is sized.

How long does a heat pump installation take?

A straightforward changeover is usually a single day. Adding electrical capacity, modifying ductwork or converting to a hybrid setup can run into a second day.

Rebates worth checking first

Before you replace equipment, check what it qualifies for. Between the federal and Enbridge programs, a qualifying upgrade can come back to you in rebates — we will tell you which of these apply to your job.
